TWO Northwich councillors are working to save the town’s Men in Sheds project.

The initiative, which helps men over 50 overcome isolation problems, is run by Age UK Cheshire and also sites in Ellesmere Port, Crewe, and Winsford.

However, those organising the Hartford scheme have been told they must move on — leading Cllrs Sam Naylor and Gillian Edwards to try and save it.

Cllr Naylor told the Guardian: “[The organisers] have approached me and Gillian Edwards and we have been trying for a while to find new accommodation and I identified this place in Tabley Street, which used to be the Greenwood furniture shop — Cheshire West owns it.

“What we are trying to do at the moment is to relocate them into Northwich. There is also this ladies group — doing upcycling — and they want to work together.

“It is vital that we do not let this go to nothing and the more we can do to help [these men] and put them in bigger premises, the better.”

At the group, men can ‘learn and share their skills, socialise, and make new friends’ in a wood-work setting.

Many of the participants produce woodcraft items like bird boxes and benches.

Cllr Naylor says he believes around 30 or 40 people were signed up to the Hartford site, and hopes to bring a similar number across to Northwich.
