PARENTS across Cheshire have pledged to feed families to support Marcus Rashford's campaign to end child hunger.

After the Manchester United footballer's bid to extend free school meals over half term was defeated on Wednesday by 322 votes to 261, mums and dads have launched a JustGiving page.

Mums and dads have teamed up with Northwich Community Support Group to make sure the poorest families will get a free lunchtime meal during half term.

The group has set up a JustGiving page and has already raised more than £2,000.

Campaigner Lee Siddall, founder of Winsford and Castle Residents Voice action group, said: “I’m so pleased with how many people have donated.

“All money will be turned into food and donated to Northwich Community Support group located in Winnington that I have the pleasure to help out in every Sunday and do an excellent job for our community.

“It's so important that our community pulls together and helps each other during tough times.

“I'm disappointed we were not given more time by the government to implement this initiative however we have manged to pull together and link things up extremely well.”

Daniela Parker, Liberal Democrat parliamentary spokesman for Weaver Vale said: “The decision made in parliament against free meals for children is going to affect so many families in the area that are already struggling.

“I am extremely proud of the community response from Lee Siddall, Keith Hinde and Vikki Moran. Teaming up with Northwich Community Support Group on this will offer a lifeline to so many in desperate need.”
