A NORTHWICH man has been jailed after he admitted to deliberately assaulting a police officer in a street in Macclesfield.

Stephen Mark Jones, 46, of Chester Road, also pleaded guilty to assaulting another man and to being drunk and disorderly during an incident on Exchange Street in the town centre on May 22.

Jones, who had previously pleaded guilty to the charges at an earlier hearing, appeared at Stockport Magistrates Court on October 15, where he was sentenced.

He was ordered to serve 26 weeks in prison for the assault on PC Ryles, while the assault on Julian Peel incurred a 12 week sentence, with that punishment being served concurrently.

In reasoning their sentence, Magistrates stated the attack on PC Ryles was so serious due to its deliberate intent and because it represented an assault on a public servant carrying out his duties, with an aggravating feature being Jones's record of previous offending. Magistrates also described how Mr Peel had been the victim of an unprovoked attack that was serious in nature.

Jones received no separate penalty for the offence of being drink and disorderly in a public place.

He was ordered to pay compensation of £200 to PC Ryles and £100 to Mr Peel.
