A NEWLY painted cycle lane in Winsford has left people feeling infuriated, baffled and nervous.

The lane is so wide, residents say it does not leave enough space to walk safely along the pavement in High Street.

People fear it will only be a question of time before someone is injured or there could be a serious accident.

The cycle lane runs past High Street Primary School,Winsford Guildhall and Winsford Tool Hire.

The cycle lane runs past High Street School

One man said: "It is absolutely crazy especially as it is outside a school where parents will be collecting kids and the remaining path is not wide enough to walk holding the child's hand.

"The space on the pavement that remains is not wide enough for anyone in a wheelchair, thus the disabled are being treated less favourably that the cyclists."

A grandma said: "I pick up and drop off my grandsons at High Street and since the main entrances of the school have been closed, making entry to the school via the very busy car park behind Verdin Exchange, it has become a nightmare.

Many residents have shared her frightening experience and say they have have almost been knocked down by teenagers speeding past on bikes.

One woman said: "I have to cross it with cyclists hurtling down behind me who apparently have lost the ability to ding their bell. I don't have eyes in the back of my head about a dual use footpath."

The cycle lane has been badly designed, say shoppers and residents, and they are now calling for it to be made safer.

One man said: "I've seen six lads whizzing past an elderly woman with a shopping trolley. It is a shared space but no one understands the rules."

A spokesman for Cheshire West and Chester Council said: "The footway cycle lane in Winsford has been in place for a number of years. As a quick measure the historic road markings have been refreshed to help promote cycling.

"However the layout of the cycle lane will be reviewed and it is appreciated that there are areas on the footway where the width for pedestrians is reduced. This review will also look at any safety concerns raised by local residents."
