DEVELOPERS are being urged to minimise disruption as they prepare to begin building hundreds of new homes in south Warrington.

The Homes and Communities Agency, which has been replaced by Homes England, had proposals for three major schemes in the area passed in 2017.

Outline plans for 180 properties on land in Stretton, bounded by Pewterspear Green Road and Stretton Road, as well as 370 homes at Appleton Cross and 400 homes in Grappenhall Heys, were passed.

Developers were later selected to build the properties – with detailed applications subsequently securing planning permission.

Barratt and David Wilson Homes – both part of Barratt Developments Plc – were picked by Homes England to construct the homes in Stretton, on land bounded by Pewterspear Green Road and Stretton Road, and at Appleton Cross.

Work is well under way at the Stretton site, with homes already built and occupied, while the construction of the remaining properties takes place.

Pre-construction work has been progressing on the land in Appleton over recent weeks, while fencing has also now been installed at land in Grappenhall Heys ahead of building work.

Land at Grappenhall Heys, off Astor Drive

The reserved matters applications submitted by Homes England and Rowland Homes for the first phases of the overall Grappenhall Heys scheme, 1a and 1b, were approved earlier this year.

Phase 1a comprises development of 58 homes on land to the south of Astor Drive and east of Witherwin Avenue, while phase 1b comprises development of 114 homes on land to the north of Lichfield Avenue and the east of Witherwin Avenue.

But with other phases still waiting for final planning permission, Cllr Ryan Bate (LD – Grappenhall) says many people he speaks to feel like they are ‘in a kind of limbo’.

Cllr Bate, who is a leading member of the South Warrington Parish Councils’ Planning Group, added: “After significant delays, I am sure that residents who live around Grappenhall Heys and Appleton Cross just want the construction to take place as swiftly, safely and considerately as possible.

“I hope that developers will take all necessary steps to minimise disruption to the local community.”
