ONE of the most talked-about developments in Northwich over recent years is now well on its way to completion.

These photos show the work that has taken place to build Waters Cross – 70 retirement apartments on the site of the former council offices in Watling Street.

Construction on the Your Housing Group scheme began last October and is expected to be complete next year.

Northwich Guardian:

Demolition of the former council offices was seen as a key step in the regeneration of Northwich town centre.

Speaking as work to build the site began last year, Cllr Richard Beacham, cabinet member for housing, regeneration and growth at Cheshire West and Chester Council, said: "This new development is the long-awaited first stage of the transformation of the area around Weaver Square.

"This is an important milestone in bringing more housing into the town centre to help support a thriving local economy."

However, developers had to produce two sets of plans for the scheme to find one acceptable to borough planners, with town councillors slamming the original scheme as looking 'awful'.

The four-storey building, which sits by Chesterway and the River Dane, will feature an on-site bistro, gardens and parking.

It will include 45 apartments for shared ownership and 25 for outright sale.
