A MAJOR stretch of motorway remains closed this morning following a two vehicle crash.

The M55 is shut in both directions between junctions 1 and 3 near Blackpool.

This closure will stay in place throughout this morning's rush hour.

It is expected that the motorway may reopen at around midday.

Lancashire Police tweeted: "Please be aware that the M55 is still closed in both directions from junctions 3 to 1 due to a collision.

"We are at the scene and an investigation is underway.

"Please bear with us, we will reopen it when we can. Your patience is appreciated."

The motorway closure follows a collision between a van and a motorcycle at around 9.10pm yesterday.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "Emergency services and Highways England traffic officers attended, though daylight is required for further work."

Motorists are being advised to follow a diversion which has been put in place.

Drivers taking the M55 westbound are being diverted off at junction1 to follow the solid black circle, joining the A6 southbound.

Then take the A5085 westbound, followed by the A583 towards Kirkham.

After that take the third exit at the roundabout to take the A585,and return to the M55 at junction 3.

Drivers heading eastbound should follow the hollow black square diversion to take this route in reverse.
