TWO Vale Royal athletes became the UK’s fastest under 15 runners of all time over the 5K road distance after fine displays last Friday.

Winsford's Holly Weedall took the girls' record while Jake Wilson took the boys' title when competitive athletics resumed with the Mid-Cheshire 5K at Kingsley.

Holly, a pupil at Weaverham High School, completed the road 5K in a fantastic 16:35 to beat the previous record set by Nicki Cornock of Cwmbran AC in 2004 by 17 seconds.

She had already won last year’s English Schools 1500m as well as Cheshire Schools and Inter County Schools Championships at that distance.

Jake, from Holmes Chapel, completed the Kingsley course in a remarkable time of 15:02 to beat the previous record set by James Shane of Basildon AC in 2005 by 24 seconds.

His run followed on from success earlier in the week at a British Miler’s Club track meeting at Trafford where Jake completed a 3000m race in 8:45.77 to rank number one in the country in 2020 for his age group at that distance also.

Coaches Andy Carter and Shaun McGrath are both pleased and proud that the athletes’ hard work is paying off with competitive success.
