A NORTHWICH councillor has spoken of how ‘proud’ he is to have witnessed volunteers helping each other in the town during the coronavirus pandemic.

Cllr Andrew Cooper made the comments in the latest Northwich Town Council meeting, hailing the town’s Covid-19 response as ‘absolutely incredible’.

A number of volunteer groups were formed in Northwich during the start of the lockdown to ensure that vulnerable and shielding adults had access to vital food supplies and medicine.

Larger charitable groups including Northwich in Need also stepped up to the plate, and these groups also received praise from Cllr Cooper.

Speaking at the council meeting, he said: “Over the last five months, the volunteer response to coronavirus has been absolutely incredible, and I’m really proud of how our community in Northwich has responded to it.

“It has been really nice to see the community come together the way it has to look after each other, taking a positive aspect out of a worldwide pandemic

“Across Cheshire West and Chester, more than 2,200 volunteers have registered with the council to help out.

“There have been larger groups such as Northwich in Need, which have been really good at filling in gaps between neighbours doing things for each other.

“Its model has been rolled out across the borough and a lot of other groups have learned from it.

“Volunteers have a lot to be proud of, not just in terms of what they have done, but how they have inspired good practice across Cheshire West and Chester.”
