TEMPORARY traffic lights in Stockton Heath which cost £4,400 to install have been removed just weeks after being put in.

Two temporary pedestrian crossings were installed in the middle of June as shops reopened after the coronavirus lockdown.

However residents complained that they were causing traffic chaos, with both less than 100 metres from existing crossings of London Road.

One reader said: "Five sets of lights from Morrisons to Sainsbury's in the area. Total waste of time and it took us nearly 20 minutes to get through yesterday. I for one will be avoiding the area."

Now both have been removed.

Other measures to help social distancing such as wider pavements remain.

A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “The crossings were put in place to help visitors and shoppers in Stockton Heath to cross the road, to assist with social distancing and to support local businesses in the first few weeks after reopening.

"They have now been removed as they were a temporary measure.

“The cost of the crossing was £4,400 which was funded by the Government High Street Fund, given to councils to support the reopening of the high street for non-essential retail.”
