FIREFIGHTERS were called upon to rescue a number of geese at Shakerley Mere this morning, Thursday.
Four fire engines from Middlewich, Lymm, Bollington and Warrington fire stations were sent to the mere along with a rescue boat at around 11.45am.
It is believed that the geese were suffering from the ill effects of blue-green algae, as the bacteria can produce harmful toxins.
Crews worked in conjunction with the RSPCA and launched the boat to enable the rescue the geese.
Firefighters have since stepped down and handed the scene over to the RSPCA and site wardens.
Anyone in the area is asked to be careful and avoid the algae, particularly those walking dogs near the mere.
