PARENTS from St Benedict’s RC Primary school have baked and delivered cream teas and Mediterranean brunches for 200 people in Wilmslow and Handforth.

The event, which was the brainwave of parents Rachel Cox and Mel Quinn, was held to celebrate a key date in the school’s calendar, the feast day of Saint Benedict on July 11.

Rachel and Mel made sandwich fillings, quiches, sausage rolls, tortilla and cakes, and with a team of parent helpers spent Friday and Saturday delivering afternoon teas and Mediterranean platters to people’s homes, raising more than £1,000 for the school.

Rachel said: “We served cream teas at last year’s school fair and made around £300.

“With this in mind, our goal was to reach around 100 people and be able to hand over £500 to the school PTA.”

The parents had orders for 60 Mediterranean brunches and 140 afternoon teas from pupils and staff as well as their families, extended families and friends, including food for a baby shower.

“We’ve been blown away by the popularity of the event,” added Rachel.

“We spent three days in Mel’s kitchen and loved every minute of it. We had such good fun we are already planning a Christmas box.”

Headteacher Hannah McGuire said: “Usually we celebrate St Benedict’s Day on the nearest school day to July 11.

“Everyone picnics on the school field and we have a visit from an ice cream van with free cones for everyone.

“Sadly this year, due to lockdown, many of our pupils were unable to be with us, so we are so grateful to our amazing parents for coming up with this novel idea.

“It meant so many more of our pupils and their families could be part of the celebration.

“Our huge thanks go to Rachel and Mel, not to mention Shonagh Pearson and Michelle Abernethy, who baked over 150 scones between them, and our seven parent delivery drivers.

“Thanks also need to go to local company, PL Infrastructure, who helped support the event.”

Year 3 pupil Olympia Ahmed said: “It felt very special having all the lovely food delivered to our door.

“The weather was really nice on Saturday, so we ate it in the garden and, for the first time in months we were able to have my uncle and grandma with us.”
