POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a bike was placed on railway tracks and hit by a train.

The train, a Northern service bound for Blackpool, struck the bike shortly after midnight on Thursday, July 9.

The driver was left shaken and distressed by the collision as he initially feared he may have struck a cyclist.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: "Placing items on railway tracks is incredibly dangerous and officers are working hard to identify who is responsible for this reckless act.
