MAKE the most of the scorching sunshine while it lasts, as hail and thunderstorms are on the way.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for hail, rain thunder and lightning throughout Cheshire as we head into the weekend.

This will come into force from midday on Friday and remain in place until 6am on Saturday.

Thunder and lightning could be accompanied by torrential downpours of between 30 and 50 millimetres of rain in just one hour.

A Met Office spokesman said: “Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out on Friday afternoon and evening.

“Where storms do occur, torrential downpours could bring 30 to 50mm of rain in an hour with hail and lightning.

“The storms will slowly clear northeastwards on Friday night, perhaps not clearing northeast Scotland until Saturday morning.”

The Met Office says that the there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.

Delays and cancellations to some train and bus services is possible, with spray also leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures.

There is also a slight chance that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost.
