THE family of a Wilmslow great-grandma who feared they had seen her for the last time are delighted she is back home having beaten coronavirus.

Jean Jones, 80, is now recovering from her health scare at home having returned from a three-week stay in Macclesfield Hospital.

Danielle, Jean’s granddaughter, told the Guardian: “When we were told she had coronavirus we thought she was a goner.

“To have her come home having beaten it is amazing.”

Jean – mum to Mandy and great-grandmother to four-year-old Harry – was taken to hospital on March 29 after having a fall.

She tested negative for Covid-19 and was discharged on April 1, returning home to be cared for by her family after being diagnosed with a lower respiratory infection.

But Jean took a turn for the worse on April 14, and a doctor who visited her at home discovered she had severely low oxygen levels.

She was rushed back to Macclesfield Hospital, where she was diagnosed with Covid-19 on April 16.

“When she was taken to hospital we did not think she would pull through,” said Danielle.

“She went in the ambulance, and myself and my mum could not go with her.

“When they shut the door we thought it could be the last time we saw her.”

Staff at Macclesfield Hospital were able to control Jean’s oxygen levels with a high supply, and she narrowly avoided being ventilated.

Her victory over Covid-19 was confirmed with a negative test before she left hospital last Thursday, May 7, and she is now recuperating at home with the support of her family and a local care provider.

Danielle said: “She has recovered from the virus but she is still on oxygen therapy for up to six weeks, and that could continue.

“She has gone downhill with her mobility but she has been off her feet for six weeks.

“But she is OK – she is home and that is the main thing.”

Jean’s family are grateful to the NHS heroes who helped her at Macclesfield Hospital, particularly those on ward two, and they hope news of her recovery can lift spirits in Wilmslow.

Danielle added: “Without the amazing team of doctors and nurses at Macclesfield, Nanna wouldn’t be here today.

“The NHS have literally saved her life.

We go out shopping for groceries once a week in Wilmslow and when you look around, everyone just looks down.

“Hopefully this can help to cheer people up a bit.”
