CHESHIRE West and Chester Council has revealed that it plans to roll out more 20mph speed limits in Northwich.

A number of roads in the area have already seen speed limits reduced as part of a borough-wide roll out.

The latest areas under traffic regulation orders are Hartford, Mere Heath, Oakmere, Marston, Lostock Green and Rudheath.

The orders, which are now in force, state: “The effect of the proposed orders will be to prohibit any vehicle from exceeding 20mph on the lengths of road specified in the schedule.”

A council spokesperson said: “Speed limits of 20mph are intended to deliver significant benefits.

“These include a reduction in average vehicle speeds across those roads that met the criteria, a reduction in road traffic collisions and increased health benefits by encouraging active and sustainable travel by children walking and cycling to school.

“An evaluation of the 20mph schemes that were delivered in the first two years has shown a reduction in average speed and a reduction in road traffic collisions.

“An evaluation of the 20mph schemes that were delivered in the third year of the programme is currently being undertaken, and the results will be presented to the council’s overview and scrutiny committee around October.”

In October last year, the Guardian reported how new figures presented to the council revealed that average speed and the overall number of collisions in west Cheshire had been reduced during the first year of 20mph zones launched in 2017-18.

At the meeting, councillors and officers said that they expect to have a more reliable picture once they get the results from 2018-19.
