PLANS have been submitted to repair damage to the Grade II-listed Dutton Viaduct.

The viaduct was built over the River Weaver near Acton Bridge circa 1836, and is part of the west coast main line.

Applicant Network Rail is seeking permission from Cheshire West and Chester Council to repair a stone block which is part of one of the viaduct’s arches.

It says that the repairs are needed to ‘secure and safeguard the structure’s historic fabric’.

In documents submitted as part of the application, Network Rail proposes to use a Lithomex mortar to repair the viaduct – a product it has used several times with ‘excellent’ results.

This will be colour matched to the surrounding stone on the viaduct.

An example of how the repair work will look when finished

Network Rail say: “The piece of stone that splintered of the voussior cannot be replaced as it broke into too many pieces when it fell to the ground, therefore Network Rail is proposing the use of mortar repair.

“It would not be feasible to install a wholly new replacement masonry block in this instance, due to the difficulty lifting a large and very heavy piece of masonry to height.

“The works are essential to safeguard and protect both railway staff visiting the structure, and members of the public at ground level below.”

They go on to state: “It is considered that the works proposed are respectful to the character and appearance of the listed structure.

“There is a sound justification for the proposed works.

“This will be done in a manner that is respectful to the heritage significance of the building.”
