THE Wirral Bikeathon has been honoured with a national award for raising more than £1m in aid of blood cancer research.

Its organisers were presented with the Fundraising Activity of the Year Award from the blood cancer charity Bloodwise.

A spokesperson for the group told the Globe: "This achievement could not have been realised without the dedicated efforts of very many volunteers who have offered their assistance over the years and the 20-30,000 riders who have taken part raising the incredible amount through their sponsorship.

"We would like to extend our thanks to all of those who have supported the event – without them nothing would have been possible.

"Thanks a million.

"The coronavirus crisis has lead to cancellation of this year's Bikeathon, which was due to take place on June 7.

"We hope to return next year with the event which has become part of the fabric of the Wirral community."
