With St Helens' home clash against Hull Kingston Rovers postponed due to coronavirus, we're taking you back to 10 years ago when Ade Gardner's four-try haul helped the men in the red vee run riot 68-12 against the Robins at Knowsley Road. This is how Mike Critchley told the story

Saints...68 Hull KR...12

‘CAN we play you every week?’ is the new refrain from the fans after Saints brought their monthly points tally against the Robins to 122.

It is a remarkable turnaround in fortunes against their one-time bogey side who had previously enjoyed a better head-to-head record in Super League encounters.

Rovers felt the backlash of a Saints side stung by the previous week’s woeful display at Salford - and they just knew it was going to be a long night when their teambus broke down on the M62.

The evening was a personal triumph for wing Ade Gardner, who turned from zero to hero in the space of seven days.

Singled out for some virulent criticism from travelling fans at the Willows, Gardner played as if he had a point to prove.

He scored four tries - the first three which saw him blast through two defenders on each occasion.

Unfortunately, his attempts to grab a fifth were denied by a three man tackle which left him nursing sore ribs.

The back three that was so out of sorts the week previously, looked a 100 per cent lot more solid.

Although Jonny Lomax, deputising for the injured Paul Wellens, dropped the first testing high bomb that was launched at him, it did not rattle his confidence.

Lomax gave a commanding display at full back, chiming into the line well and showing real zip to latch on to a Leon Pryce pass to touch down.

To put the icing on the cake, Lomax booted three conversions after Kyle Eastmond had retreated.

Eastmond had another fine game, showing his star quality with the try of the match which saw him dummy and shuffle his way through a bewildered Rovers defence.

And he is rapidly developing the additional strings to his bow needed to be a rounded team player at number seven.

That was summed up by his quick thinking to spot Gardner in space on the right flank - a play that was executed with an inch perfect kick wide that was as good as a pass.

He is being assisted greatly these days - without many plaudits - by Leon Pryce who again took a lead role in guiding the team around.

Man of the match, however, was James Roby who was the beating heart behind this up-tempo, energetic performance.

Roby takes versatility new levels, cropping up on the flanks late in the game and crossing for a try that any other number two in the British game would have been delighted with.
