Here's what happened in this weekend's rugby union fixtures...

LYMM:

EVERYTHING that could have gone wrong did so for Lymm on Saturday.

After losing both half-backs to injury in the first half, the major reshuffles required did little to help their prospects on what was already an unhappy hunting ground for them at Kirkby Lonsdale.

The Cumbrians took full advantage, stretching out into a comfortable lead before the break and keeping their visitors at arms’ length after it to secure a 29-14 win.

Despite the disruption in the ranks, Lymm director of rugby Adam Fletcher believes they had enough chances to come away with something.

However, he says they were “taught a lesson in being clinical” by their hosts

“Not a great day up in Cumbria” he said.

“Ultimately, our defence and accuracy weren’t up to the standards that they need to be.

“We let KL off the hook numerous times and they taught us a lesson in being clinical.

“Injuries to key personnel didn’t help us but we still had enough ball and territory to come away with something.

“On the plus side I thought we battled hard and showed great spirit throughout.

“Big credit to Ben Stansfield – he played out of position on three occasions and he did really well.”

Lymm lost scrum-half Tom Shard to a dislocated shoulder after just five minutes, with fly-half Scott Redfern following him with a knee injury before the opening period was finished as Kirkby Lonsdale stretched into a 22-0 lead.

The visitors fought back as Oli Higginson released Nathan Beesley to score, with Cormac Nolan converting.

Fletcher’s side pounded away at the Cumbrians’ line as the second half begun, but a combination of errors and good defence meant there was no way through even when the hosts had a man sent to the sin bin.

Kirkby Lonsdale added another try to seal the win, making Nolan’s late score a mere consolation.

Lymm are currently scheduled to host Harrogate on Saturday.

Lymm squad: Jordan Widdrington, Adam Bray, Gav Woods, Aaron Rashid, James Yates, Matty Connelly, Oli Higginson, Joe Watson, Tom Shard, Scott Redfern, Nathan Beesley, James Kimber, Steve Pilkington, Ben Stansfield, Cormac Nolan, James Pitcher, Nick Ashton, Ali Sutherland

The seconds were 17-14 winners over their Blackburn counterparts, with Rory Riddell crossing twice to go with a try and conversion from Alfie Simpson.

Lymm Eagles edged a tight encounter with neighbours Moore, winning 21-20 at Moss Lane.

WARRINGTON:

“THIS was more like a typical Warrington performance.”

Those were the thoughts of head coach Andy Roberts after bottom side Keswick were blown away by his side, who stretched to a 34-5 win.

A rampant first half saw them pretty much wrap things up, with Kieron Hughes, Luke Gilhooley and Sean Callendar crossing to give them a 22-0 lead, with JP Hudson adding two conversions and a penalty.

Keswick shaped themselves after the break as Warrington took their foot off the gas, with the visitors able to open up the defence to score their first points.

However, they proved immaterial as Gilhooley’s second try secured a valuable bonus point for Warrington before Ryan Eastwood touched down to add some gloss to the scoreline.

Roberts said: “This was more like a typical Warrington performance, although we did have a short nap in the second half.

“Next week we travel to Stockport, but that fixture is probably in the lap of the gods at the moment.”

EAGLE:

EAGLE took a giant step towards the North West Intermediate League Division Four West title on Saturday.

Prenton – the side in second place with whom Ste Yates’ men have gone stride-for-stride this season – were their hosts and the Thornton Road side came away with a priceless 15-11 victory.

Kieron Thomas was pivotal as he scored a try and provided the kicked assist for Danny Cahill to provide what turned out to be the crucial score.

“It was a great effort to propel us towards that league title,” head coach Yates said.

“We have lost out twice this season to Prenton in the league and cup – the second a cruel draw that saw them take the honours – and we knew that we had to get a lead as scoring in those games was difficult.

“We did that then defended for thirty minutes.”

Eagle are due to welcome Hoylake seconds to Thornton Road on Saturday.
