MIDDLEWICH Town Reserves have reached the quarter-finals of the Cheshire League Reserve Division Challenge Cup.

A 3-0 success at Billinge on Saturday confirms they finish top of Group B.

Assistant manager Ant Young said: “It was a good solid performance in difficult conditions.

“Some excellent performances throughout the team. Possibly the best we’ve played all season.

“The ideas we’re trying to implement is really starting to show on the field.”

Gale force winds and a small, bobbly pitch didn’t help.

It took Town 10 minutes to settle down before taking control.

Sam Fallows scored the first goal when he pressured a defender into a mistake and he finished well past the advancing keeper.

Fallows then doubled the lead when put through by Chris Holbrooks and audaciously dinked the ball passed the on-rushing keeper.

In the second half Joe Pointon slotted home at the far post from a free-kick that eluded everyone in front of him.

Town should have been awarded at least three penalties and the game would have been beyond Billinge, but in the end needed two great saves from Jacob Kirwan in the last 10 minutes to keep their clean sheet.
