WARRINGTON Wolves’ new-look left edge is only going to get better, says Tom Lineham.

With Toby King replacing Bryson Goodwin as the winger’s centre partner, and Gareth Widdop operating on that side since his arrival in the team, the trio’s combination with rejuvenated back-rower Ben Currie can be considered a ‘work in progress’.

They all combined for Lineham’s four-pointer in the win against Castleford Tigers on Friday, making him the top try scorer in Steve Price’s team and showing the solid foundations already in place.

When asked how Lineham feels his partnership is going with fellow England Knights international King, he said: “Huey and Dewey he calls us, dumb and dumber effectively.

“But we’ve not conceded a try on the left edge with 13 players or 12 players this season. We conceded with 11 men against Wigan – dismiss that.

“We’ve not actually conceded a try and we’re keeping that as an accolade that we’re very pleased about.

“Defensively we’re doing a lot of good things and I think we’re the stronger edge at the minute.

“So it’s exciting. We’ll keep working hard, working together. We’re very good friends me and Tobias. So, long may it continue for Huey and Dewey.”

Lineham also offered his views on how he feels Great Britain and England international scrum half Widdop is settling into the team following his switch from the NRL with St George Illawarra Dragons.

“Defensively he’s really good,” said Lineham.

“It’s just with half-backs they have little traits that they like to do and it’s about us trying to build them relationships. We’re working together as a group in the video room and on the pitch to try and make ourselves a really formidable edge.

Warrington Guardian:

“He’s been there and done it over the other side of the world. He’s an international player.

“There’s a lot of pressure on him. Coming in he had an injury and it wasn’t the best start for him.

“But there’s no undermining his class and I’m sure he will continue to get better and better.

“We will help him and build formations and plays that complement us all.

“It’s a team sport. You can’t just stick an half-back out there and say ‘win us the game’.

“Collectively we have to do it.

“Both Gareth and Blake Austin are classy players, under a lot of pressure at the minute and that’s going to come with their marquee titles, but everyone’s working hard and we will continue to get better.”

Lineham was asked which of his other teammates were catching the eye at the moment.

“Joe Philbin,” he screamed.

“He is a little cannonball.

“He’s had his teeth done so he’s gone through the roof. He was probably a five out of 10, I’d give him an eight of 10 now and that shows on the field.

Warrington Guardian:

“Obviously he’s killed it for the last few years. He got the GB honours and I’m really pleased for him because he’s a really good bloke and he’s receiving a lot of attention across the game and rightly so because his carries, his defence, his energy, he loves it.

“He’s a great person all round, I’m really pleased for him. I think he’s up there with the form props in the competition.

“He gets a bit upset sometimes when he doesn’t start games. And I’m like – “Joe, when you come off that bench it gives the team a lift as this little crazy long-haired cannonball bombing round into everyone.” I think he’s brilliant and I think he doesn’t quite understand the positive effect he has on the team and how influential he is. So, well done Joe.”
