You don’t often associate opera with sport. Yet Dave Walmsley, who organises outreach events for Sale Sports Club, has booked one to come to Sale.

After he had seen the Flat Pack Opera Company perform the Magic Flute on the Wirral, he immediately invited them to appear at the Avenue Methodist Church on Saturday, March 7 to sing Cosi Fan Tutte.

“It is a bit of a gamble considering the outlay,” said Dave,

Flat Pack Opera are a new company of professionally trained singers.

“They are very good. Cosi Fan Tutte is my favourite opera. It is done in a modern setting in modern dress. It updates well”, he said.

The opera is ideal for a company of only nine. There are six main characters.

The plot centres on two couples. A cynical friend of two men says he can prove their partners are fickle.

The men supposedly go off to war but they come back in disguise and successfully woo the opposite partner.

Dave said: “It’s a dark comedy. The title means 'All women are fickle'. The quality of the music will appeal to the audience.”

He said there was a lovely trio called “Let the Winds Blow Softly” and the tenor had a top notch aria in the first half.

“It’s an accessible opera which is melodic, tuneful and will open doors to listeners.”

Tickets are priced at £12 and can be purchased from 0161 282 8154.
