MIKE Amesbury has welcomed ‘significant progress’ in the campaign for leaseholder justice following the publication of Competition and Markets Authority investigation.

A report by the CMA found leasehold homeowners have been unfairly treated and prospective buyers misled by housing developers.

Many leaseholders in Winnington have contacted the Weaver Vale MP about leaseholding issue, and Mike has been one of the leading Parliamentary campaigners fighting to end the practice.

As a member of the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee he helped secure an inquiry into leaseholding.

He has also raised the issue at Prime Ministers Questions as well as repeatedly with ministers directly, and hosted a meeting with Winnington Village residents alongside shadow housing secretary John Healy.

Speaking following the publication of the CMA report, he said: “This is significant progress in the campaign for leaseholder justice.

“The Competition and Markets Authority has now said what we've known all along, that homeowners have been treated appallingly, and buyers have in some cases actively been misled.

“The CMA says it will now launch direct enforcement action against companies it believes have broken the law.

“Again, this is progress, as is the ban on new leasehold properties, but until we right the wrongs of having so many people – including many in my constituency – who have already purchased these properties and are unable to do anything about it, the campaign for justice on this issue will continue.”
