SCHOOLBOY racing enthusiast Jamie Goode is hot on the tracks of his idol Lewis Hamilton and hopes to overtake him one day, writes John Williams.

But for Jamie at only 14, it is going to take some time before he nips past the Formula One driver to get the chequered flag.

The youngster, like his racing hero Hamilton, has been picking up karting trophies since he was 11.

Now, since becoming a volunteer marshal at Oulton Park at saloon car races, Jamie has been given the chance to get behind the wheel himself after gaining his licence in the Association of Racing Drivers Schools test.

Jamie, who went to Holmes Chapel Primary school and then the village comprehensive before switching to Crewe Engineering and Design UTC, has been accepted for a team place with Derby-based Wheatley Motorsport and will be one of the youngest drivers on the grid.

He has been given a Citreon Saxo to drive in saloon races but his dream is to get up the ranks to compete in more powerful beasts.

His dad Peter Goode, a local heating engineer and plumber, has been taking Jamie to racing events all over the country since he started to show an interest in the sport while still at primary school.

Jamie says becoming one of only two youngsters in the Motorsport team is a great chance to show his true prowess on the track.

His first outing in junior saloon racing championships will be at Silverstone in March but it is an expensive pursuit with entry fees of £550.

Weekends when he is not racing he gets up at 4am to help with the milking at Alumbrook Farm, Holmes Chapel, and is appealing for sponsorship on social media, including Facebook, to realise his dream of becoming a professional racing driver.

So far it has raised £200 towards racing costs of £2,000 and one of his main sponsors is JK Ashbrook Plant Hire.

"It is fantastic to have got a place in the junior saloon racing championship and I feel confident I will do well because I am very competitive and in go-karting, I have been top of my game," said Jamie.

"I'm trying to get sponsorship so I can maintain my place racing the Citreon Saxo in 18 races of the championship and any money, however small, will be a great help."
