IT has been a special week for great-gran of 10 Sylvia who has been celebrating her 100th birthday.

Sylvia Dixon, who went by the surname English before marriage, lived in Whiston and Rainhill before moving to Daneside Court Care Home in Northwich, where she celebrated her special occasion on Monday alongside family and other residents.

She received a card from the Queen, was showered with bouquets of flowers and enjoyed enough tea and cake to sink a ship.

“Sylvia had a wonderful afternoon and her time was shared with her family, other residents from Daneside Court and town mayor Kevin Rimmer,” said Daneside Court wellbeing coordinator Sharon Lelonek.

“She was surrounded with bouquets of flowers and of course, a telegram and birthday card from the Queen.

“There was plenty of birthday cake and cups of tea for everyone to enjoy.

“Her great-grandchildren also loved the special occasion and were even competing to sit on Sylvia`s knee.

“The whole day and environment was a delight, and it was such a special time for Sylvia.

“We can’t help but thank her for letting us join in with the celebrations.”

Born on February 10, 1920 in Newcastle, Sylvia moved with her sister Monica and brother Wilfred to Hoylake on the Wirral, where she spent her childhood and attended school.

The family moved again to Liverpool prior to the Second World War, which led to her meeting her future husband Eric, who she married in March 1942.

After the end of the war, Sylvia moved again to Whiston and later to Rainhill, where she spent most of her life.

She has three children - David, Kenneth, and Doreen – has five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Some people never get the opportunity to receive a card from royalty, however this is the second time that Sylvia has received one.

Unfortunately, the first came due to tragic circumstances from King George VI in 1944 following the death of her brother Wilfred, whose plane was shot down over Austria with serving with the RAF.

Since moving to Daneside Court, Sylvia has settled in well, often socialises with the other residents and is very happy.
