A HERITAGE project working to repair and restore shops in Northwich town centre has given Hays Travel a boost.

The Townscape Heritage Project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council, aims to enhance the quality and appearance of High Street and Witton Street.

Hays Travel moved into 29 Witton Street in August, and now boasts new hand-painted signs – making a bright addition to the area.

The shop was built by pawnbroker James Worsley as an investment property in 1902-03. The shop was originally two separate stores but was merged into one in 1939.

Don Bircham, managing director at Hays Travel (north west), said: “Although initially sceptical of a traditional sign to replace our modern design, I was delighted with the external signage which enhances the look and feel of our new shop.

Northwich Guardian:

“We received excellent support from the team at Cheshire and West and Chester Council and the financial contribution was very welcome.

"Northwich is a beautiful town and we feel privileged to have secured such a prominent and historic location."

Cllr Richard Beacham, CWAC cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We are delighted that the Townscape Heritage Project is continuing to provide benefits to local businesses in Northwich.

“The scheme only has a year left to run so we would encourage any interested businesses in the selected buildings to take up the offer of a grant as soon as possible.

"You can do this by contacting our Townscape Heritage Officer either by telephone on 01606 288825 or through the Townscape Heritage website at northwich-th.co.uk/contact-us”

Don added his gratitude to Northwich residents for their support since the shop opened last year.

He said: "May I also take the opportunity to thank the good people of Northwich for the amazing support since we opened our doors.

"The staff recently won an award for finishing top performing shop in the entire north west region.
