CHILDREN at Rudheath Senior Academy are flying high after taking part in the Hummingbird Project to improve their emotional wellbeing.

A group of Year 7 pupils are taking part in the eight-week training course which aims to give them the tools to become more emotionally resilient and learn positive psychology.

The workshops are co-designed by psychologists at the University of Bolton, young people from across the North West and MedEquip4Kids to help tackle the growing in mental health issues amongst youngsters.

The sessions aim to address concerns and challenges before looking at strengths of everyone in the group and exploring happiness, resilience and character strengths, hope, gratitude and mindfulness.

Emma Leftwick, assistant headteacher, said: "The aim is to make a real, measurable difference to young people’s emotional wellbeing.

"By helping students and school staff to become more aware of the early warning signs, we can get the right help quicker and also reduce the stigma associated with mental illnesses."

It is one of many new projects and changes which have taken place at the Middlewich Road school since it joined North West Academies Trust in November 2018.

Steve Docking, CEO of NWAT, said: “We believe every child deserves the best possible education, and we’re working extremely hard to make Rudheath the best it can be.

“This is another step forward.”
