VOLUNTEERS have been praised for cleaning up the large traffic island on St Michael's Way.

The team all belong to Middlewich Community Pride and spent several hours on Sunday clearing weeds, dirt and debris from the side of the road.

The group was revived by crusading Cllr David Latham to tidy up the town.

Russell Cooper and a group of six residents made several attempts to complete the work in December but were thwarted by bad weather.

In the latest clean up, they discovered two more drains that had been completely blocked by soil and weeds.

"It's all about trying to get the community involved in making the town a nicer and better place to live," said Cllr Latham.
