WINSFORD’S oldest community award still in use has found a new home.

The Dempster Challenge Cup is awarded each year to the best kept allotment plot at Over Allotments, Moss Bank.

“This historic cup can now be seen in Winsford Town Library,” said John Malam, vice chairman of Over Allotments Association. “It’s on display in the library’s community cabinet alongside a history of the cup and a roll of honour which records all winners from 1926 to the present day.”

The cup was presented to Winsford Town Council in 1926 by Miss Edith May Dempster of Vale Royal Abbey, Whitegate, for the allotmenteers of Winsford to compete for.

“This year’s winner will be announced at our open day in July,” said John. “To have your name engraved on the cup is what everyone wants and the competition to come out on top comes after months of friendly rivalry. This year’s contest has already begun amongst some of the group."

Cllr Lyndsay Barwell said: "The idea of displaying the Dempster Cup, an interesting part of Winsford's history, was brought to Winsford Town Council's allotments committee.

"We were happy to have it displayed. We encourage people to go to the library and read its history which I found intriguing."
