HUNDREDS of runners gathered at Carey Park on Saturday to celebrate a the 100th Northwich parkrun.

The event first started back in Spring 2018 and is now a regular fixture in the Northwich calendar which always attracts hordes of people, young and old.

Northwich’s 100th parkrun was no different, with 426 runners, joggers and walkers taking to the course to enjoy some Saturday morning cardio.

And of this total, 53 were first timers and 75 recorded new personal best times.

Town mayor Kevin Rimmer officially started the run and took the time to personally thank all of the volunteers involved.

Northwich Town Council arranged for a cake to be made by Vinnie’s in Northwich to mark the occasion, and Dan Pender and the British Legion provided tea and coffee for all the participants and volunteers.

Speaking about the landmark event, event director Amy Lockett said that she couldn’t believe how far Northwich parkrun has come in such a relatively short period of time.

Northwich Guardian:

Darron Pweats, who finished the parkrun in first place, had the honour of cutting the cake

“It was a beautiful morning with just perfect running conditions, and it was just incredible to see so many people join in,” she said.

“We didn’t know when we stared just how successful it would be, and we’ve gone from having a core team of 10 to now having more than 100 volunteers, and from 200 inaugural participants to over double that now.

“Our parkrun is especially popular when events are being held in the town on the same day, such as the artisan market, or in this case, the Music Making a Difference fundraiser.

“Parkruns also have a big following across the country, and we welcome people who try to visit every course and those who want to be a part of milestone events like ours.

“Every week, people come up to us and say how great a job we have done in organising Northwich parkrun from nothing, but as the saying goes, there is no I in team.

“We have a great set of volunteers with us and I can’t put into words how grateful and thankful I am to each and every one of them for their help and support.”

Northwich parkrun is a free, weekly and timed 5k route taking place each Saturday at 9am in Carey Park.
