A major route in Greater Manchester has closed after a "serious" crash.

The eastbound route of the M602 has closed between junction one and two after a collision involving a car and a van.

All members of the emergency services, including North West Motorway Police, are on the scene.

Normal traffic conditions were expected to return at 2.30pm, but the road is now set to be closed until 5pm.

A spokesman for GMP said: "At around 11.50am on Friday 17 January 2020, police were called to reports of a collision involving two vehicles.

"The road is closed in both directions between junctions one and two and is expected to remain that way for several hours.

"We would advise people to avoid the area where possible.

"No arrests have been made and enquiries into the incident are ongoing.

"Anyone with information should contact police on 0161 856 4741 quoting 1101 17/01/20."

Trapped traffic is set to be turned around and diverted to the M62.

Anyone looking to use this route should follow the solid black diamond symbol.

This will take you to the anticlockwise carriageway of the M60 at junction 12.

Leave the motorway at junction nine and take the A5081 northbound Park Way until Parkway Circle roundabout and follow the A576 northbound.

Follow this route until you're able to rejoin the M602 at junction two.

Motorists are encouraged to leave extra time for their journeys and try to avoid the area if possible.

More to follow.
