RECENT arrests at Tata’s Winnington Works has led to a renewed warning to thieves and trespassers.

Increased security measures have prevented a number of attempted cable thefts, and Tata Chemicals Europe (TCE) is warning people to stay away for their own safety.

As well as many redundant buildings in the process of being demolished, the Winnington site includes live operational buildings and infrastructure including chemical, steam and other potentially hazardous pipework, as well as live high and medium voltage electricity cables and substations.

Gill Littlewood, TCE head of safety, said: “We have had a number of recent incidents of trespassing or attempted cable theft at the site, and five people have been convicted of offences. Three people are currently in jail as a result.

Northwich Guardian:

“We’ve collected significant evidence from the most recent attempt and expect this to result in more arrests.

“However, as well as risking arrest, people attempting to steal cable from the site are exposing themselves to significant dangers. Cutting into or near a live electricity cable can be lethal. It is simply not worth the risk.

"Many of the redundant buildings on the site are structurally unsound and are in the process of being demolished. The presence of demolition work on site increases the risks.

"I must also remind people that it against the law even to be on private land and you can be prosecuted if found on the premises.”

TCE has further stepped up its security, using ‘very effective’ technology, while Cheshire Police are working in partnership with Tata’s security staff at the site to target those involved in this sort of activity.
