IT’S a coincidence that 20-year-old Gyan Maria’s middle name is Singh... for the young American has just been appointed Musical Director of Sale Male Voice Choir.
Previously guest pianist and choir director of a mixed choir at St. Paul’s United Reformed Church, New York, he is a newcomer to male voice choirs.
“When I arrived in Manchester, the choir secretary, Andrew Jeffries, gave me a CD of a Welsh Male Voice Choir and I loved it.
“I have tried to introduce the members to long phrases which makes a piece more interesting to both choir and audience,” he said.
“It would be good to get them more bookings. Since I arrived we have got them a half hour slot at 2 pm at Stretford Public Hall on Saturday, December 7.”
Gyan’s first big concert will be the Christmas Celebration at Timperley Congregational Church on Thursday, December 19 at 7.30.
He believes the highlights will be In the Bleak Midwinter, arranged by Assistant Musical Director, Margaret Jones and a US favourite, Christmas Time is Here from Charlie Brown.
Gyan has won many American music awards and performed numerous piano solos in the States.
He remembers playing Chopin’s Nocturne at the Stamford Music and Arts Academy, New York, where, from 2017, he was staff accompanist.
“I was going through a dark period and my teacher’s praise restored my confidence.”
Bach is his favourite composer. “I have played his music on the pipe organ. There is nothing like it,” he said.
Gyan has enjoyed his experience in Manchester.
“I have been impressed by the musical opportunities here.”
Choir member, Andrew Jeffries said: “Especially for one so young, Gyan shows great application and dedication. He bonds well with our members and his musicality is plain to see, or rather, hear.”
* Tickets for the Christmas Celebration are available for £5 including refreshments from 0161 962 4591 or at door.
