URMSTON Choral Society are to perform The Manchester Carols, a suite of new carols re-telling the Christmas story. It was first performed at the Royal Northern College of Music by schoolchildren from around the Manchester area in December 2007.
Written by former poet laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, and composer, Sasha Johnson Manning, the carols celebrate Jesus’ birth and tell the story of how he championed the marginalised in society.
The concert, which will include St Monica's School, will take place at St Monica’s Church, Irlam Road, Flixton, on Wednesday, December 18, at 7pm. The Choir, who will also sing a selection of traditional Christmas carols, will be joined by children from St. Monica’s school who will add their own special contribution.
The choir’s Musical Director, Julie Parker said: “Manchester has a long history of being the pioneers of change in society as well as welcoming marginalised people from many areas of the world.
˜The Manchester Carols celebrates our community spirit and cosmopolitan way of life while reminding us what a joyful and magical time of year this is”
