PUPILS at St Bede’s Primary School in Weaverham will soon be able to enjoy year-round sporting activities after plans were approved for a new artificial pitch.

The new multi-use games area (MUGA) will be built on a section of the existing playing field and will be surrounded by a two-metre-high mesh fence.

It is hoped that the pitch will ensure all pupils have the option to take part in a range of sporting activities, and they will be encouraged to do so by staff.

“An increase in pupil numbers means the concrete playground is overcrowded, and the first aid book has daily records for minor bumps, trips and scrapes from pupils wanting to be active, but restricted by limited space,” said headteacher Louise Conlon.

Northwich Guardian:

“The installation of the MUGA would reduce congestion on the playground all year round and also increase the capacity for sport active provision.

“The field is an important facility at the school, however it is only accessible to the pupils for less than half of the school year, due to muddy and slippery conditions.

“A priority for the school is to develop the opportunities for active participation for all pupils, focusing on those pupils who lack confidence and are least active or least willing to participate.”

The MUGA will be line marked for a range of different sports which will be utilised for both lessons and general play.

The school also aims to organise a full year of specialist coaching from local sports clubs, which pupils can join after experiencing taster sessions at school.
