A 95-year-old woman has been without her “lifeline” for a fortnight, as problems continue to affect landlines in Wirral.

At least a dozen people are thought to be affected, with some lines going down completely and others experiencing complications.

Helen Fletcher, the granddaughter of the elderly lady, said other people have reported hearing different conversations through their own landline and local numbers have appeared to be from areas hundreds of miles away.

Ms Fletcher said: “My grandmother’s phone has been out for two weeks now. I am concerned for her and others like her, elderly people who live home alone.

“They rely entirely on their phone, people need to be aware of this.”

Detailing other issues with landlines in the area, Ms Fletcher added: “One lady who lives near my grandmother said she could hear different conversations when she picked up her phone.”

Ms Fletcher’s granddaughter lives in the CH46 postcode area, which covers Leasowe and Moreton.

Apart from the issue itself, Ms Fletcher is annoyed at the way her grandmother’s network provider Talk Talk, have handled the problem.

She said: “I have tried to sort this out many times. On Friday, Talk Talk said they would get an engineer out within 24 hours, but they still haven’t done anything.

“I spoke to them again on Monday night [November 11], and they said the problem will be solved within 72 hours, I asked for a manager to give me reassurance on this and then the phone went dead.

“I want this to be a priority issue, but it doesn’t seem like it is when they put the phone down on me. I had been on the phone for 50 minutes to get to this point.”

Expressing her frustration, Ms Fletcher said: “This is not a normal family [who have other means of communicating], this is a 95-year-old lady whose lifeline the landline phone is.

“I know one of the other people affected is 86. These are elderly people, you think they’d look after them.

“My grandmother was involved in planning the D-Day invasion, you would hope at this time of year they would show these people respect.”

Talk Talk were approached for comment.
