A CAREGIVER waded through ‘waist-high’ water to deliver medicine to her elderly client during the flooding at the weekend.

Shelly Denne, deputy care manager for Home Instead Senior Care in Northwich, arrived at Waitrose to find that Weaver Court was completely surrounded by the flooding.

But rather than letting her client – an 87-year-old woman with dementia – down, she went above and beyond to find a way to get to her home.

“My client relies on Home Instead to administer her medication, and I needed to find a way to get to her house, despite the water being too high for my car to get through,” Shelly said.

Thinking on her feet, Shelly approached a gentleman from the Environment Agency and explained the situation, and thankfully he was more than happy to help.

Shelly continued: “The men from the Environment Agency took me round to London Road in their van, but then it was deemed too deep to go any further.

Northwich Guardian:

“We decided to use their big green machine to try and get through the water with me holding onto the side, but then the machine’s engine flooded and wouldn’t restart.”

Not wanting to give up, Shelly took off her coat, handed it to the driver and began wading through the flooding to get to Weaver Court.

And after reaching her client’s home, she was able to successfully administer the medication and check that everyone was ok.

“I can’t thank the staff from the Environment Agency enough for their help in this situation,” Shelly added.

“I had never seen the water so high, but I am glad that I could get to our client, who relies on us to provide care and medication.

“I will certainly never forget this day.”
