STAFF at a pub in Acton Bridge have delivered free hot meals to grateful residents trapped in their homes by flood water.

Workers at The Riverside decided to help their neighbours as it was the ‘right thing to do’ and were happy that they could bring a smile to their faces during such a difficult period.

All the staff agreed to help out, despite the pub being busier than usual sue to it closing the next day for refurbishment.

But they said that it was worth the extra effort to help those in need as in times like this, ‘everyone has to stick together’.

The decision to plate up carvery dinners and take them to residents was made by supervisor Hope Garner, who donned her wellies with team member Grace Tomlinson before wading through the water.

“I noticed in work on Saturday night that the river was starting to get high, but it was really bad the next day,” said Hope.

“As I was walking down the road, the water was nearly at the top of my wellies and you could see that people’s gardens were completely flooded.

“There was no way that people would get in their cars to leave their homes, so we all really felt for them and wanted to do something to help.

“In times like this, everyone has got to stick together, and we decided to help out in as best a way that we could.”

Hope and Grace delivered meals to 15 grateful residents, who were shocked and humbled that staff had taken time out of their busy day to help them.

“People were really surprised but in a good way, and everyone that we visited was so grateful to us for popping by,” Hope added.

“We knew that there would be people stuck in their homes that would really appreciate a nice hot meal and we just really wanted to help.

“Everyone was thrilled and offered to pay us for the food, but we said no because it was just the right thing to do.”
