A YOUNG volunteer who loves to help people has seen his hard work recognised with a national award.

Ben Whalley, from Davenham, was nominated for the National NatWest OSCARS in the young volunteer category for all the time and effort he has put in at Davenham Cricket Club.

Since the age of 10, he has been a regular at the club, performing tasks such as DIY work and helping the groundsmen to cut the grass.

And at a glittering awards ceremony held at Lords Cricket Ground, 18-year-old Ben was presented his runner up award by England international Chris Woakes and commentator Charles Dagnall.

“Ben did not know anything about being nominated, so it all came as a very big shock,” said his mum Annelise.

“He volunteers because he loves the cricket club and helping people – that is just the kind of person that he is.

“It’s safe to say that he was absolutely overwhelmed when he found out that he was going to London for the national award ceremony and it is great recognition for all of his hard work over the years.”

As well as helping out at his local cricket club, Ben has been a fire cadet as well since the age of 12 at Northwich Fire Station.

With rules stating that he had to leave after reaching 18, he asked if he could stay on as a fire cadet instructor and is delighted that he can continue to help at the station.

Northwich Guardian:

“All of the family are so proud of him and the award is well deserved for all the time and hours he has put in to help." Annelise added.

“He never asks for anything back and he is a very thoughtful and amazing lad who has so much time for everyone.

“A lot of people in the area know Ben and it is just great to see his hard work rewarded in this way.”
