WIRRAL golfers have been putting cancer in its place by taking part in the grand final of the Ultimate Golf Challenge.

Taking place over a couple of months, the Ultimate Golf Challenge (UGC) from Playfair Events ended in spectacular fashion with a grand final at Caldy Golf Club on Thursday, October 10.

The event saw finalists experience a day in the life of a professional golfer to support The UTS Foundation.

This year the tournament raised an astonishing £14,000 to help the UTS Foundation continue to deliver free exercise and nutrition programmes to those living with cancer in Wirral.

More than £2,000 worth of prizes were handed out on the day from the likes of Hillbark Hotel, The Shankly Hotel, Gusto Heswall and Major Golf Direct.

The competition format was Texas Scramble which sees a team of three to four golfers tee off then compare results and select the one which is the best shot.

Once this has been determined, the other members move their golf balls to the spot and stroke from there.

Team Broady’s Bandits ended the round on -13 strokes with 49 points lifting the The UGC trophy via standard countback from second placed SJPP.

Josie Wales of team MJ Lavin Plant Hire won a luxury 48 hours test drive courtesy of Lexus Chester but were just 6ft away from winning a luxury Lexus motor for life.

A professional film crew from Playfair recorded the final and golfers had the chance to experience live scoring and leaderboards before getting their hands on the UGC claret jug.

Jamie Conroy of Playfair Events told the Globe: "We encourage Wirral golfers to take on the challenge of playing 72 holes in 1 day, the challenge will push you physically and mentally but is fun and you will have a sense of achievement knowing you are helping the 12,000 people of Wirral who are living with or effected by cancer, the important factor for me is that all monies raised stays on the Wirral unlike many national charity organisations."

The Ultimate Golf Challenge sees golfers play 72 holes (4 rounds) in any 24-hour period between May and August.

Players have to walk around 20 miles and stay on course from sunrise to sundown.

The top 18 teams on the live fundraising leaderboard then progress through to the final of The UGC.
