A FORMER soldier was ‘not fit to be at large’ after placing a live cartridge into a fireplace at a pub,

The explosion at the Cock of Budworth was recounted at Northwich Police Court, and the young man was fined £2.

Further charges included throwing a brick through a Sandiway pub window and disorderly conduct at a pub in Barnton.

THE Ministry of Health sanctioned Northwich Urban Council’s purchase of a site in Witton for new housing.

Further questions were yet to be answered on sites at Winnington and Church Walk.

Meanwhile, the council was advised that Army huts could be converted to housing.

50 years ago

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy was fined £5 at a juvenile court, after admitting theft.

He had stolen 3,000 cigarettes worth £32 5s. from a newsagents – where he worked as a newspaper delivery boy.

ANTROBUS Parish Council set out to stop village streets flooding every time it rained.

Pole Lane and Hall Lane were the main culprits, with farmers’ unkempt ditches thought to be to blame.

The issue was taken up with the District Surveyor.

STUDENTS at Kingsley County Secondary School were set to be transferred to Weaverham County Secondary School as the closure of the former approached.

A GANG of ‘raiders’ – including a woman with a shaved mohican – stole cardigans from a Witton Street shop.

Three offenders – two men and a woman – were sought after running into Dorothy Perkins, taking five green cardigans and fleeing.

A RUDHEATH school ‘rose from the ashes’ following a devastating fire.

A £1 million scheme to replace the gutted Rudheath County Primary School was approved by Cheshire County Council, after a fire tore through the 40-year-old building six months earlier.
