REVISED plans for 16 apartments on the Leicester Street roundabout have been submitted to Cheshire West and Chester Council.

The new proposal supersedes the 2017 application which featured 12 flats, and sees design changes as well as a fresh layout.

Located between Megabet and the parking spaces on the new roundabout, the apartment complex would range from two to four storeys tall, with pitched roofs and timber.

With vehicle access to the east of the site and an 18-space car park, the ground floor of the apartment block would include one two-bed and three one-bed apartments.

The first floor would consist of two two-bed and four one-bed flats, with two two-bed and three one-bed apartments on the second floor.

The top floor is earmarked for a single one-bedroom flat, located to the west of the site facing towards the town centre.

A planning statement submitted in 2017 said: “The proposed one and two-bedroom apartments should enhance the choice of housing in the community.

“Internet research of the Northwich housing market in early 2017 has shown the market is dominated by terraced houses and large apartments of three or more bedrooms.”

While similar plans were approved in 2011, the permission lapsed and the recent attempts reflect wholesale changes made to the roundabout’s design.

The latest design will be considered by CWAC planning officers, although a resident of nearby Hadfield Street has voiced concerns, fearing the height and timber claddings could be an ‘eyesore’ and a ‘blot on the landscape.

The comment added that the development ‘will cause further problems on a roundabout which is already severely congested at peak times’.

But initial planning documents said the design would allow for ample open space to remain on the roundabout.

The statement added: “The site is now derelict and doesn’t utilise its full potential, therefore the applicant wants to use the site for residential as a more viable alternative.”
