WORK has started on a £110,000 plan to put new paving in front of Warrington's Golden Gates.

Council bosses say the work will take eight weeks to complete and will see Yorkshire paving replace the existing surface immediately in front of the gates on Sankey Street which is 'showing signs of deterioration'.

Street lighting will be upgraded to low energy feature lighting which will up light the gates at night.

Warrington Borough Council leader, Cllr Russ Bowden, said: “Our iconic Golden Gates are shining once more following their restoration, and it’s important that the surrounding area is of an equally high quality.

“These improvements are part of the wider public realm improvements at the front of the Golden Gates and will help make this historic area more attractive and accessible for all.”

A temporary compound is being established on Garven Place for the storage and preparation of materials by the contractor, Dowhigh Ltd.
