A REVIEW of HS2 will decide whether the multi-billion pound rail project should be scrapped.
Led by former HS2 Ltd chairman Douglas Oakervee, the Government-commissioned independent review will consider ‘whether and how’ it should proceed, the DfT said.
A final report will be sent to Transport Secretary Grant Shapps with oversight from the PM and Chancellor of the Exchequer by autumn.
Phase 2b of the HS2 project, running between Crewe and Manchester, would pass between Winsford and Middlewich up to Pickmere and curve around the A556 to the east of Northwich.
The project also proposes a 4km long train depot at Wimboldsley.
Speaking about the review, Mr Shapps said: “The PM has been clear that transport infrastructure has the potential to drive economic growth, redistribute opportunity and support towns and cities across the UK, but that investments must be subject to continuous assessment of their costs and benefits.
“That’s why we are undertaking this independent and rigorous review of HS2.”
The review will see a panel of experts looking into the benefits, impacts, affordability, efficiency and deliverability of the project.
Mr Oakervee added: “The Prime Minister has asked me to lead this important review into the HS2 programme.
“I am looking forward to working with my deputy, Lord Berkeley, to advise the government on how and whether to progress with HS2, based on all existing evidence.”
