Many took advantage of staff's offer to say a final goodbye, with meet and greet sessions taking place today and yesterday.
Guardian readers paid tribute to staff at the store, which has had a presence at various town centre locations since 1908.
Tracey Pardoe said: "Very sad to see store close today in our town, made sure we went in this afternoon to say bye bye."
Anne Sutton added: "So sad after all that time, good luck to all the staff."
Support for shop staff was echoed by many, including former workers.
Chalene Gibson wrote: "Worked there myself for 14years. I made some wonderful friends and I was sad to say goodbye for the last time to some of them today.
"Good luck to you allt thanks for the memories."
