IT was only the second game of the season, but Jake Parker’s wonder strike for 1874 Northwich on Tuesday has already been tipped for the goal of the season.

1874 secured a 3-1 derby win over Winsford United on Tuesday night, and it was the Northwich side’s second goal that has caused somewhat of a stir online.

A video of Jake Parker’s rocket of a volley was posted on Twitter and was soon being shared by far and wide.

As the ball hits the back of the net, the lights in the Barnton Memorial Hall directly behind the goal are switched off, which prompted many people to with comment that they’d never seen a goal turn out the lights until now.

“Well, it will take some beating for goal of the season,” a club spokesman said.

“Winsford had got a goal back through a terrific free-kick, so our supporters were all a bit nervy considering we had such a slender lead after dominating the game.

“It's great to see Jake available and starting games. He is so talented but hasn't ever settled with a club for a long period. He seems to get what we're about and our supporters love him around the team.

“To settle a derby game with a goal like that at our new home, in what has become a growing rivalry was really sweet for our fans especially after volunteers have worked so hard promoting the move to Northwich and making ground improvements to Townfield.”
