AN activist group is hosting a film day to raise awareness of the ‘climate emergency’ the world is currently facing.

The event, hosted by Transition Northwich, will feature the showing of three films and one lecture, all of which will discuss different issues surrounding climate change and what residents can do to reduce their carbon footprint.

Paul Mathias, from Transition Northwich said: “We thought about doing this three or four months ago.

“We held a few discussions about it and decided we needed to do something to address this climate emergency.”

After each film there will be a discussion where visitors can talk about the issues raised in each film.

The event starts at 10.30 am and the first film is ‘The Age of Stupid’ starring the late Pete Postlethwaite.

Following a 30-minute discussion about the film there will be a showing of a video presentation ‘Heading for Extinction and what to do about it’ starting at 12.40pm.

The award-winning 2015 documentary ‘Tomorrow’ will be shown at 2.30pm.

The final showing of the day is for the 2018 film ‘Being the Change: A New Kind of Nature Documentary’.

Paul said: “The Age of Stupid is on BBC quite regularly so that it is fairly easy to see but the same can’t be said for the others.

“The Extinction Rebellion presentation is really good because it gets across the urgency of the matter, whereas the films from a few years don’t quite get that across.

“We want people to discuss the topics brought up in these films and on September 8 in the Greenbank Community Hub we are hosting a follow up workshop to carry on the discussion about what we can do.

“As Greta Thunberg said, ‘if you’re house was on fire you would try and put it out’.

"Well that is the situation we are in now. We have to do something while we can do something.”

The day is free to attend but it is recommended that people book places for the films they want to see online.

The event takes place in the Salvation Army building in Tabley Street on Saturday, August 10.
