A PERSON has died after being hit by a train between Southampton Central and Brockenhurst.

British Transport Police received an emergency call at 11.55am yesterday and were on the scene near Foxhills in Ashurst.

Paramedics and police were also called to the area.

A spokesperson from British Transport Police said: "Officers were called to an area of rail track in Foxhills, Ashurst, at 11.56am today following a report of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended but sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

"Efforts are underway to identity the person and inform their next of kin. Officers will now prepare a report for the coroner."

South Western Railway said: "We have received reports that a person has been struck by a train.

"Our response teams are working with the emergency services to assist with the incident.

"In order to allow emergency services access to the railway all trains in the area will remain at a stand, and the electricity to the track may need to be switched off."

All lines were blocked and train services running through the stations will be cancelled, delayed or revised.

Disruption coninued until 7pm. 

South Western Railway said tickets would be accepted at no extra charge on GTR, GWR and Cross Country sevices via "any reasonable route and London Underground services between London Victoria and London Waterloo."
