TORRENTIAL rain failed to dampen the spirits at this year's Mobberley Rose Queen Festival.

In what organisers described as 'monsoon conditions', those taking part in the parade smiled and danced throughout while hundreds of people braved the elements and lined the streets.

Saturday's parade started from the Victory Hall and progressed along Town Lane, Bucklow Avenue, Edenfield Road, then back along Town Lane and down passed the Bulls Head & Roebuck before going on to the scout hut field on Hall Bank Lane.

Festival chairman Laura Leighton said: "Along Town Lane the heavens opened and what can only be described as monsoon conditions continued throughout the procession.

"A big thank you goes to everyone who braved the conditions to cheer the children on along the procession. There was a lovely community spirit.

"All the children were amazing despite the weather they were still smiling and waving at the crowds and thoroughly enjoying their moment in the limelight."

After returning to the field, new Rose Queen Lucy Norbury, 10, from Mobberley Cof E Primary School, took her throne and was crowned by Sam Ackroyd.

Lucy's mum, Penny, told the Guardian: "Lucy had an absolute ball. It was an amazing day – a dream come true."

When the rain eventually stopped the junior and senior Morris dancers took to the field.

Laura continued: "The dancing was truly fantastic and showed what hard work Joy and Baz Parkes and Julie Eddie had put into teaching the girls the routines week in week out.

"A very special mention must go to the Junior Morris troop who, having been absolutely soaked during the procession, still took to the dance boards to perform, the youngest member was only five and the girls really did make the watching crowds smile. Well done to each and every girl that did the dancing you really put on a great show for Mobberley."

There was an abundance of trade stalls as well as hot food and tea and cakes provided by the Scouts.

After the main event there was the annual BBQ and disco held at the Railway Inn with DJ Pete Deane.

Laura added: "Thanks to all parents, sponsors and helpers for bringing this wonderful festival together. However, if we are to continue with the Rose Festival we need more people to help out.

"Some of our committee have well outlasted their own children being part of the festival and we must now look at the parents of the children involved to get on board and continue this village tradition."
